Matthew's Meat Sauce

Ingredients Method
1 pound mild Italian sausage (bulk or in casings) 1. Bring olive oil to a shimmer in a large skillet.
1/2 pound lean ground beef 2. Add onions and garlic. Sautรฉ over medium high heat until onions begin to brown.
1 can diced tomatoes 3. Add meats, breaking apart with a spatula.
1 cup tomato sauce 4. Sprinkle seasonings over top and mix in well.
1 teaspoon teach garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper 5. Allow to cook until meat is completely brown.
1 tablespoon dried Italian seasoning 7. Add tomatoes and sauce. Reduce heat to low, cover, and allow to simmer for 15-20 minutes.
1 1/2 cup diced onion (about 2 small onion's worth) 8. Refrigerator improves the flavor and texture, but isn't necessary. Serve hot.
1/2 tablespoon olive oil
4 cloves crushed garlic

Serving Suggestions

  • Goes well with pastas that allow it to cling, such as short cut noodles with lots of nooks and crannies, and very wide noodles
  • Works well as a lasagne sauce or for stuffing shells

Variations

  • Ground turkey can be used in place of beef for a leaner meal
  • Various spicinesses of ground pork are available, all to suite multiple palettes
  • Fresh herbs can be used, but should not be added until the very end to avoid burning and damaging the sensitive oils
